Evelyn Reyes has a lot to be proud of. She recently celebrated her first year anniversary as head chef for the United Nations Federal Credit Union building.
After serving time, Evelyn connected with Hour Children. They provided her a supportive place to stay and she enrolled in the Hour Working Women Program.
Evelyn always felt like she was capable of more than she had achieved in the past, and she was right. Hour Children helped her navigate getting into culinary school. “They opened the door for me,” she says. Her hard work and openness to learning opportunities have gotten her where she is now: Head Chef.
That doesn’t mean everything is easy now. She works in a male-dominated industry and has to combat stereotypes.”I feel like a survivor” Evelyn says. “It makes me stronger every day.”
Hour Children saw the potential Evelyn always knew was inside her and helped her tap into it. She has set her sights on even greater challenges for the future; one day she hopes to own her own business. We believe she will!
