Hour Host Family Program

Hour Children / Hour Host Family Program

Host a Child and Change a Life!

What Does It Mean to Host a Child?

Hosting a child means opening your home for a short, scheduled stay—usually over a weekend or during the summer—to support their visit with an incarcerated mother. As a host, you provide a safe and welcoming space, while Hour Children covers the child’s needs, including meals, transportation, and supplies. You offer care, supervision, and a sense of comfort, while we take care of the logistics.

Why Host a Child?

Hosting a child is a powerful way to make a difference. On weekends and throughout the summer, host families provide children who have limited opportunities to see their incarcerated mothers with a safe, caring home. It’s more than just a visit; it’s a chance to nurture connection, offer stability, and create moments of joy that children carry with them for a lifetime.

How to Become a Host Family

Becoming a host family is a beautiful and impactful way to support a child reconnecting with their incarcerated mother. Here’s how to get involved:

1. Submit an Application

Interested families begin by completing a short application and background check. This ensures we create the safest and most supportive environment for the children.

2. Attend Orientation

Once accepted, you’ll take part in a comprehensive orientation where you’ll learn about the program, daily schedule, expectations, and how Hour Children will support you every step of the way.

3. Commit

The summer program runs for five nights in July. During this time, you’ll host a child in your home, provide evening meals, and offer a nurturing, stable space where they can unwind after a long day with their mom.

4. Provide Daily Transportation

Each morning, you’ll drive the child to either Taconic or Bedford Hills Correctional Facility by 9:00 AM, and pick them up at 2:30 PM. These visits are the heart of the program.

5. Create a Caring Evening Experience

Evenings are for dinner, downtime, and shared activities. Hour Children will also host group events during this time so children and families can bond and have fun together.

6. Know You’re Supported

You’re never alone in this journey. Hour Children’s staff is available 24/7 during the program to answer questions, offer guidance, and provide whatever support you need.
